Depart con­s­tructs audio­vi­su­al worlds as dyna­mic sys­tems – tran­si­to­ry sand­bo­xes of syn­chro­ni­ci­ties which bor­der on the sur­re­al and enable the unex­pec­ted by means of cross-modal emer­gence.
I will dis­cuss our com­pu­ta­tio­nal approach to poe­tics that places the com­pu­ter simu­la­ti­on and gene­ra­ti­ve tech­ni­ques at the core of our semio­tic inves­ti­ga­ti­ons. We explo­re the rela­ti­on of myth, ritu­al and algo­rith­mic mani­fes­ta­ti­ons at the dis­sol­ving boun­da­ries bet­ween the vir­tu­al and the real. A stroll through uncan­ny val­leys and limi­nal spaces, whe­re vola­ti­le mea­nings emer­ge from a seman­tic twilight.

Leon­hard Lass (1978) is a digi­tal artist, desi­gner and lec­tu­rer based in Vien­na.
1999 he has foun­ded the artist group „Depart“ tog­e­ther with the musi­ci­an Gre­gor Laden­hauf whe­re he focu­ses on the com­pu­ta­tio­nal con­s­truc­tion of poe­tic sys­tems, which stri­ve towards an intri­ca­te indi­vi­du­al expe­ri­ence.
As a desi­gner he deals with com­plex inter­faces for pro­cess con­trol and data visua­li­sa­ti­on. He has been tea­ching about gene­ra­ti­ve design, data map­ping and UX design.
